Poetry Month - Day 7: Funambulist

Today's word, suggested by rhymer extraordinaire, Penny Klostermann, has me feeling a bit off balance. It's "Funambulist" and it was a tough one. I don't think I'd be able to write a good poem, not matter how much time I'd have, so I'm biting the bullet and posting it now. Please be kind :-)

Funambulist
“Get down from there!  I must insist!
You’re not a real funambulist!”

“Don’t worry, Mom, I’ve got good balance.
Watch me walk across this valance!”

“Careful, dear, you’ll crack your head!
You’ll have to spend a month in bed!”

“Oh, no I won’t.  I never fall.
Hey, look - I’ll balance on a ball!”

“My nerves are wracked.  I’m getting mad.
That’s it!  I’m gonna call your dad!”

“I’m guessing Dad won’t do a thing.
He’s Rick Wallenda - Tightrope King!”

Poetry Month - Day 6: Katzenjammer

There's an amazing young man named Erik, who is totally immersed in the kidlit community.   He has a blog called This Kid Reviews Books, where he - you guessed it - reviews books!  In addition to that, he guest posts on other blogs, is a regular commenter and participates in writing contests (and sometimes wins)!  You can learn more about Erik and read his book reviews on his blog!

Anyway, Erik gave me the word for today - Katzenjammer!  He gave me the definition: "A feeling of uneasiness, worry or nervousness".  I looked in the dictionary and found another definition: "uproar; clamor", and decided to use that instead.  So, here's the poem I wrote using Katzenjammer.  Thanks for the great suggestion, Erik!

Katzenjammer

“Order!  Order!” the judge banged his hammer
to quiet the chaos - a real katzenjammer!

The verdict was in.  They had set the girl free.
The crowd moaned and groaned,  “Tell us, how could that be?”

“We all know she did it.”  “It’s simply not fair!”
“She ate all the porridge!”  “She broke the tot’s chair!”

“She slept in their beds without having permission.”
“She fled from the house - it’s as good as admission!”

“The jury was wrong!”  “ They have heads filled with rocks!”
“The verdict’s just right!” said the girl with gold locks.

Poetry Month - Day 5: Penultimate

Here's my poem using Joanna Marple's (don't you love her name?) word, Penultimate.  I used the definition: "next to last".  Be sure to read the story below the poem - it's a fun one and will explain the poem.

Penultimate
My sister, Mindy, was supposed to be,
the penultimate child, when Julie made three.

But, unknown to everyone, there was one more
Yes, I surprised all of them. I'm number four!

Here's the backstory:
When my mother was pregnant with my twin sister, Julie and I, she didn't know we were twins.  They didn't have ultrasounds back in the day - we were lucky they had running water and electricity :-)  Anyway, my mother's water broke 6 weeks early and the doctor thought the cord might be wrapped around the baby's neck so they did an emergency c-section.  After Julie was born, the doctor started to stich up my mother, when he said, "Oh my gosh, there's another one in there!"  Enter #4!  So, Julie ended up being the penultimate child instead of Mindy.  Cool story, isn't it?

Poetry Month - Day 4: Magenta

I've been so busy with work and getting ready for the workshop I'm teaching on Saturday, I almost didn't get today's poem done.  I had accepted the fact that it wouldn't be very good and I would have to live with it.  But, I ended up liking it a lot!  I hope you do too!   Today's word was suggested by my old (as in long time) friend, Elaine.

Magenta
I know an old woman, with hair of magenta,
who always butts in - she’s a regular yenta!

“So, what are you doing and where are you going?”
“Go put on a dickie, your bossom is showing!”

“You'd better not slouch or you'll get a hunched back”
“You’ve gained a few pounds, Dear, you don’t need that snack!”

I’m losing my patience.  I can’t take her prying.
But when I complain, she insists that she’s dying.

I’ll have to distract her if I’m gonna to beat her.
I’ll get her a job as the new Walmart greeter!

Poetry Month - Day 3: Superlative

This time, my sweet sister gave me the word of the day - Superlative - really?!?!  The only good thing about this word is, it didn't take much time to write because I know a hopeless situation when I see one (lots of practice)! So, here it is - short and sweet!

Superlative
This poem may be smart but it could be smarter.
This poem is so hard and it’s getting harder.
This poem’s not the longest, the worst or the best.
Rhyming "superlative"? My brain needs a rest!
