Poetry Month - Day 5: Penultimate

Here's my poem using Joanna Marple's (don't you love her name?) word, Penultimate.  I used the definition: "next to last".  Be sure to read the story below the poem - it's a fun one and will explain the poem.

Penultimate
My sister, Mindy, was supposed to be,
the penultimate child, when Julie made three.

But, unknown to everyone, there was one more
Yes, I surprised all of them. I'm number four!

Here's the backstory:
When my mother was pregnant with my twin sister, Julie and I, she didn't know we were twins.  They didn't have ultrasounds back in the day - we were lucky they had running water and electricity :-)  Anyway, my mother's water broke 6 weeks early and the doctor thought the cord might be wrapped around the baby's neck so they did an emergency c-section.  After Julie was born, the doctor started to stich up my mother, when he said, "Oh my gosh, there's another one in there!"  Enter #4!  So, Julie ended up being the penultimate child instead of Mindy.  Cool story, isn't it?

Poetry Month - Day 4: Magenta

I've been so busy with work and getting ready for the workshop I'm teaching on Saturday, I almost didn't get today's poem done.  I had accepted the fact that it wouldn't be very good and I would have to live with it.  But, I ended up liking it a lot!  I hope you do too!   Today's word was suggested by my old (as in long time) friend, Elaine.

Magenta
I know an old woman, with hair of magenta,
who always butts in - she’s a regular yenta!

“So, what are you doing and where are you going?”
“Go put on a dickie, your bossom is showing!”

“You'd better not slouch or you'll get a hunched back”
“You’ve gained a few pounds, Dear, you don’t need that snack!”

I’m losing my patience.  I can’t take her prying.
But when I complain, she insists that she’s dying.

I’ll have to distract her if I’m gonna to beat her.
I’ll get her a job as the new Walmart greeter!

Poetry Month - Day 3: Superlative

This time, my sweet sister gave me the word of the day - Superlative - really?!?!  The only good thing about this word is, it didn't take much time to write because I know a hopeless situation when I see one (lots of practice)! So, here it is - short and sweet!

Superlative
This poem may be smart but it could be smarter.
This poem is so hard and it’s getting harder.
This poem’s not the longest, the worst or the best.
Rhyming "superlative"? My brain needs a rest!

Poetry Month - Day 2: Lackadaisical

Another college friend, Heidi, gave me my word for today - Lackadaisical. Great word - I use it all the time!!  And, it wasn't until I saw it written, that I realized I've been pronouncing it the wrong way my whole life (well, probably not the first 5-10 years)!  I've always said "laxadaisical", which actually makes sense since the word "lax" is similar in meaning.  You learn something new every day!!  Now, ready or not - here's poem #2!

Lackadaisical
At times I’m lackadaisical.
I just don’t want to playsical.
I’m sort of in a hazeical.
So, I just stay at home.

but . . .

When not so lackadaisical!
I act a little crazical!
And I can be amazical!
It's then I like to roam!

And, for Jane and Erik, who suggested "orange" and "silver" respectively, I've written this quickie.

Orange and Silver
Orange and silver are hard words to rhyme.
I never will do it - there’s not enough time!
But, silver’s an element; orange, a fruit.
Take that!! Jane and Erik!! For being so cute!!

Poetry Month - Day 1: Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious

I hope you've had a chance to check out some of the websites I put in my post yesterday - they are chock full of poetry goodness!

Now, here's my poem, using the word suggested by my college friend, Patti.  I hope you like it!

Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious

Last night I had a brainstorm and created a new game.
For every day in April, I’ll pick words that aren’t the same.

It’s sort of like March Madness - I’ll write poems in which I use 'em

And, since I like a challenge, I’ve invited friends to choose 'em.

So, Patti Harris posted one - she’s always been precocious!
It’s Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious!

Come back tomorrow to see what crazy word my friends think up next!
